Nearly four years ago I took a big leap and moved to San Francisco, a city that I knew nearly nothing about. I made the decision and left Colorado in a matter of a month. I had a suitcase, two boxes of belongings and absolutely no plan. I had less than $5,000 to my name in my checking and savings account. I couch surfed and stayed with various acquaintances until I got on my feet. It was an incredibly challenging and humbling experience. There were times that I thought I had made a huge mistake.
But deep down, I knew I was going to be all right. And here I am almost four years later (nearly in one piece)!
I was telling this story to some new girl friends last weekend and it spurred a discussion about the human spirit and resiliency.
One of my friends said that certain people’s ability to pull through a challenging situation is a statement about that particular person, rather than an understanding about the whole human race. She expressed that because of the cards that some people are dealt in their life, they are destined to live a specific life and there are certain risks they shouldn’t take.
This didn’t sit well with me.
I can’t believe that there are select people with a special DNA that makes them more capable of achieving their own version of greatness.
I can’t bring myself to believe that some people are more special than others. At the same time, I believe that we are all special.
I am not negating the fact that people can be born into environments that unfairly gives them less opportunities. But no matter who or where you are, you are capable of reaching deep inside yourself to use your gifts.
I get where my friend is coming from. If you are realistic, you are guaranteed a safe, predictable life.
But I’d rather put more energy towards helping people see that they really can do anything they want.
That’s why I love online entrepreneurs. There are examples of online entrepreneurs everywhere that have built lives around their passions, while doing work that is meaningful and makes a difference in others’ lives.
You have people like Mike who built a thriving virtual men’s coaching practice all while traveling the world and having a hell of an adventure along the way.
You see people like Lezly and Clay who have made it their mission to help people create loving relationships in their life
You have people like Natalie who serves people that want to create freedom in business and adventure in life and she does it while traveling the world.
Everyone that is living their purpose had to make a conscious choice at some point to go down this path. They made different choices.
You are special and not special- all at the same time. It’s how you choose to look at it that makes the difference.
